EORI - General

EORI number = Economic Operators Registration and Identification number.

All Economic Operators that are based and active in the European Union (EU) must have an EORI number.

This number allows economic operators in all member states to be identified in the same manner. This provides efficiency benefits for both these economic operators and Customs. An economic operator is ‘any physical or legal person who, in the course of his business, is involved in activities covered by Customs’.

You are required to use the EORI number as an identification number in all customs procedures when exchanging information with Customs. Also, when you carry out these customs procedures in other member states of the EU.

Format of EORI number

The EORI number issued to economic operators comprises:

  • the country code followed by
  • a code or number that is unique in the member state

The Dutch EORI number is made up of:

  • 'NL' followed by
  • the economic operator’s tax reference number

If the NL tax reference number consists of less than 9 digits, the EORI number will be supplemented with leading zeros.
